Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct specialised strata control operations
   • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to conduct specialised strata control operations
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures according to site requirements
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply mine environmental, geological and survey data according to site requirements
   • Determine, obtain and transport resources according to job requirements
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
2. Install and secure supports
   • Coordinate activities with others within scope of own role
   • Carry out equipment, materials and services checks according to site requirements
   • Carry out prestart and start-up according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
   • Scale down roof and ribs according to site requirements
   • Drill holes for rib and roof bolt installation according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements
   • Install and secure supports according to manufacturer specifications and job requirements
   • Identify and monitor geological conditions and respond to changing conditions according to site requirements
   • Monitor risks and hazards and confirm safe operation of plant and equipment
   • Carry out park-up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
3. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Prepare machine/equipment for maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
   • Carry out housekeeping activities according to site requirements
   • Complete maintenance records according to site requirements

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

conduct specialised strata control operations on at least two occasions in abnormal strata conditions, including:

scaling down roofs and ribs

drilling holes for rib and roof bolt installation

installing and securing supports.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures and confirm to work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for conducting specialised strata control operations, including:

identifying and minimising environmental issues, potential hazards and risks

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

complying with environmental requirements and constraints

identifying work requirements

applying diagnostic and fault finding techniques

interpreting and applying mine plans

identifying specialised support equipment and materials

operating specialised support equipment

installing specialised supports

work effectively with others to conduct specialised strata control operations in a way that meets required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

complying with reporting requirements and procedures

determining coordination requirements throughout work activities.
